Eighth Meeting February 2013

We worked on our Respect Myself and Others petal. The first thing the girls did was take a plate and draw a happy face on one side and a sad face on the other side. I then asked them a series of questions and asked how it made them feel. For example, how do you feel about Girl Scouts? How do you feel when someone is mean to you? Then they held up which side applied to them. Some questions had mixed answers and I asked some of the girls why they felt the way they did. We also talked about respect and what it means and ways they can respect other people. We talked about respecting themselves as well, by having clean teeth bodies and clothes and loving themselves.

After snack we played the handkerchief game (though I only had a paper towel) where I threw it in the air and while it was in the air they laughed as loud as they could.  As soon as it hit the ground they had to stop and get really quiet. The girls then each took turns throwing the towel up in the air. I told them the same way they got quiet when the towel hit the ground, that's how I want them to be when someone puts up the quiet sign. Then we spoke about ways that Girl Scouts respect each other (Girl Scout sign, Quiet Sign, Girl Scout handshake).

Then before we left I gave each girl a piece of paper. (This idea was given to me by a user on a message board I belong to). I asked them how the paper looked, did it look new or old. They all said new. I told them to crumble it. They all looked at me like I lost it and said WHAT?? I said go ahead crumble it up! Then they did and I said now try to make it look new again. They all agreed that there was no way to do that. I let them know that is what happens when you are mean to someone. Words hurt but you can't see it, and there is no way to take it back. They all understood.

They were so excited to earn their petal and they were very respectful to each other! Yay girls!!

Meeting Cancelled/Postponed

Due to unforseen circumstances the meeting last night was cancelled. I am hoping we can get it rescheduled for next week. I got some GREAT ideas from a message board I am on for this next meeting. I cannot wait to share them with the girls!
